Mandatory trash is when everyone is required to pay Citrus County for waste disposal. "This will not get litter off the roadways" says Ina Ray. "A large corporation and a few of the County Commissioners would like to line their pockets and tell the citizens how much they will pay for waste disposal without choice." Mandatory trash became an issue around 2002, there was a past uproar where Commissioner Fowler stated that local haulers shouldn't buy any new equipment because they will be out of business by the end of the year. That statement was said in 2003 and as of today, we do not have mandatory trash. Mandatory trash is said to better the landfill, when in fact this would not help because pricing and pickups. Now the citizens have the choice of how much to pay and who picks up. So far some of the responses from the community disagree with mandatory trash.

As
for any hope of mandatory trash in the future, Ina Ray states " Trash
needs to be disposed of properly. Mandatory trash will not take care of
Road and Street side litter or the people who just want to pile their
trash outside of their homes, or on someone else's property.
